Health Carousel – a total healthcare management company with an industry-leading portfolio of staffing solutions – continues to demonstrate its commitment to social change. Always cognizant of the need for change to promote positive outcomes and remain competitive within the industry, the company strives to promote innovation, help staff develop new skills, and improve employee morale.

Here is a snapshot of Health Carousel’s social impact in 2021, a year when all industries struggled to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Delivering Help Where It’s Needed

Health Carousel is focused on providing staffing and training solutions worldwide through its three service brands and made several significant achievements in 2021. The company’s recent 2021 Social Impact Report outlines the accomplishments of each brand – highlighting the programs that aided global communities – and the many accolades Health Carousel received for its ongoing efforts.

Health Carousel Locum Tenens, which literally means one filling in for another, “delivers easier, faster access to a nationwide pool of highly qualified physicians and advanced practice providers” to help health organizations meet temporary staffing needs. Clients “have access to a full suite of locum tenens specialties; dedicated specialty recruiting teams; and technology-led recruiting, credentialing, verification, and onboarding programs.”

In 2021, Health Carousel Locum Tenens served more than 64,000 patients, making it a six-time winner of a Best of Staffing Award.

Additionally, the program expanded, acquiring Vitruvian Medical in January 2021– one of the leading anesthesia-focused locum tenens physician and advanced practice staffing companies in the United States – and Medpath Solutions in February 2021 – an innovative physician workforce management company whose mission is to help healthcare organizations improve patient care and save lives.

Health Carousel Travel Nursing is “a travel staffing solution designed to deliver easier, faster

access to a nationwide network of highly qualified nurses and allied healthcare professionals

when and where they are needed most

The Travel Nursing program served nearly one million patients in 2021, earning Health Carousel numerous accolades, including Best of Staffing Satisfaction, Talent Satisfaction, BluePipes Best Travel Nursing Company, Best of Staffing Client Satisfaction, a Highway Hypodermics Award, Gypsy Nurse Top Travel Nursing Company, and American Staffing Association Healthcare Staffing Employee of the Year.

Health Carousel International “gives healthcare organizations a remedy for being chronically understaffed by using short-term contract labor to fill persistent full-time openings. Through [its] international recruitment brand, PassportUSA, [the company has] the largest network of highly-qualified and credentialed global healthcare professionals available for interview and selection anywhere. [Its] growing, sustainable pool of registered nurses, therapists, and medical technologists has on average eight years of experience, education, and training that exceeds common standards or practice in the United States.”

Health Carousel’s international programs serviced nearly 650,000 patients in 2021, with 347 individuals passing the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam – an English language proficiency test that more than 11,000 employers, universities, schools, and immigration bodies accept around the world – and 299 individuals passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) – a computer adaptive test required for nursing graduates to license as a registered nurse (RN) in the United States and Canada.

Committed to the Community

Beyond its primary programs, Health Carousel also sponsored and participated in numerous events around the globe in 2021, each focused on providing support for local communities.

Summer Olympics Program

Health Carousel prompted its employees to give back through the Summer Olympics Program, an annual event where staff “can earn points for completing various challenges in learning and professional development, movement, and physical wellbeing, and [give] back how they are called and able [to]. … Employees [can also] earn points in the ‘Gives Back’ challenge by donating physical items [or] monetary funds, donating blood, or volunteering.”

In addition, the Health Carousel team hosted its first-ever virtual Gaming for a Cause Trivia Night, which benefited the nonprofit organization Child’s Play. The event included several competitive rounds of historical and pop culture trivia, raising $500 for the charity. Funds were directed toward supporting the needs of network hospitals by providing monetary gifts and helping them purchase games, toys, and technology to enhance the patient experience.

Fighting Cancer in the Fall

In autumn 2021, Health Carousel hosted the second annual Fighting Cancer in the Fall event, which aims to help educate, connect, and support Health Carousel employees while giving back to local communities. The company partnered directly with the Cincinnati Chapter of the American Red Cross to sponsor $5,000 toward the organization’s efforts to fight cancer. Employees also participated in a blood drive, donating enough blood to potentially save 165 lives. Furthermore, Health Carousel staff and others associated with the organization participated in a virtual raffle that benefited the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Mary Grace Memorial Foundation. Not only did Health Carousel staff, family, and friends donate items and participate in the event, but the company also matched every dollar donated, which doubled the amount of money raised.

Red Cross Donation Collection

When tornadoes hit Kentucky in December 2021, the Health Carousel team jumped into action, helping those most affected. The company worked with local Beechwood Schools to deliver much-needed supplies. It also matched monetary contributions from employees to support the American Red Cross with its on-the-ground work in Kentucky – for a total of $5,000 in donations.

Making Global Change

Health Carousel’s social impact is truly global in nature – reaching well beyond the borders of local communities in the United States and extending to other affiliates around the globe. Here are some of the most impactful events Health Carousel sponsored in other parts of the world in 2021.

With offices in Manila and Cebu, Health Carousel Philippines is the exclusive provider of the PassportUSA program for healthcare professionals in this tiny Southeast Asian country. Licensed by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), the recruitment agency helps thousands of Filipino healthcare professionals find gainful employment in the United States and work toward achieving the “American Dream.”

Despite the challenges of the ongoing pandemic, Health Carousel Philippines was able to “raise the standards of recruitment practices in the Philippines and be an agent of change through responsible and ethical recruitment” through a variety of activities and events in 2021.

As part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy, Health Carousel hosted a free webinar for healthcare professionals in September 2021. Nearly 400 participants learned to manage stress through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other techniques. Additionally, Health Carousel celebrated A Day of Care during Philippine Nurses Week by donating 1,000 care bags to nurses in four hospitals in Manila and one in Cebu.

Through its Light the Way Initiative, Health Carousel aims to improve upon its high standards as a social enterprise making strategic investments in the global nursing community. Health Carousel’s program continually invests in nurse recognition, scholarships, and training programs as a means to develop more nurses abroad than it recruits to the United States.

In 2021, Light the Way offered a Nursing Licensure Examination (NLE) Masterclass for future RNs. Nearly 4,000 students from more than 350 schools attended the 4-part series. Of those who attended, 77 percent took and passed the board exam in July; 59 percent passed the board exam in November.

Likewise, Light the Way offered faculty development training for nursing instructors in cooperation with St. Paul University of the Philippines and Holy Angel University. More than 100 faculty members participated in the August and October sessions.

In addition, Light the Way and Health Carousel Philippines held two events in March and September focusing on how to become globally competitive and a successful nurse in the United States. Nearly 400 nurses attended these sessions.

The DAISY Awards

Since 2020, Health Carousel has worked with the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Foundation to increase global awareness of the foundation’s mission to give nurses around the world the hard-earned recognition they so much deserve. The DAISY Awards “honor extraordinary nurses who demonstrate genuine compassion and care in everything they do.”

In the first and second quarters of 2021, two Filipino nurses received  DAISY Awards: Noemie Cabildo from Tuguegarao and Marigold Corcino from Davao del Norte. In addition, the first DAISY Award Honoree for Extraordinary Nursing Student in the Philippines was given to Sherwin Pazzibugan from St. Paul University of the Philippines, Tuguegarao.

Learning Sessions

From April to November 2021, Health Carousel provided free webinars and training for nursing candidates. Among these learning sessions, which attracted nearly 1,600 participants, were NCLEX focus group discussions, IELTS intensive reviews, and a 3-part clinical webinar series on nursing opportunities, assignment facilities, and careers in the United States.

KamUStahan Sessions

During the pandemic, Health Carousel utilized KamUStahan sessions to strengthen teams, connect peers with one another, and discuss work-, health-, and safety-related issues. Using Facebook Live Catch-Up, nurses currently living in the United States had the opportunity to share their experiences with peers in the Philippines in a series of seven sessions. Viewership ranged from 1,000 to 3,000 and reached as high as 3,500 in April 2021.

Health Carousel’s Community Impact Awards

The efforts of Health Carousel and its employees received several accolades in 2021, including a Medical Mutual Pillar Award in the Medical Mutual SHARE (Serve, Help, Aid, Reach and Educate) category and an American Staffing Association Care Award for its social impact giving back to local communities through charitable giving and volunteering.

The Medical Mutual SHARE Award honors companies that exemplify employee-driven community service, philanthropy, and volunteerism. Johanna Krogh, senior social impact and engagement specialist, shares her thoughts on the award: “You know you’re part of something special when you are inspired by the team and the work around you. This year brought so many challenges for companies and nonprofits across the world, and I am just so grateful to be part of a company [whose] employees and leaders stepped up in new and unique ways in 2020 to meet those growing needs.”

The American Staffing Association Care Award recognizes businesses that are committed to social responsibility initiatives and ethical policies. Chief People Officer Marijke Woodruff shares the following: “Our leadership team is so humbled and proud that our social impact is being felt across the nation. This award is really a reflection of the collective efforts of our amazing employees, family, friends, and community partners, as we aim to deliver both our business mission and our social mission to improve lives and make healthcare work better.”
