After finishing his schooling at Rishi Valley School in Andhra Pradesh, Gopal Vittal pursued his undergraduate degree at Madras Christian College. He went on to earn an MBA from IIM in 1990 and joined HUL. One of the most notable accomplishments during his tenure at HUL was Project Bharat, where he developed a strategy to penetrate rural India by incentivizing people to try HUL’s products.

During his 16-year tenure at HUL, Gopal Vittal started as a fresher and worked his way up to leadership roles before Sunil Bharti Mittal recruited him to head marketing operations at Airtel. Vittal played a pivotal role in transforming Airtel’s mass-market strategy, which resulted in the company’s customer base growing from 33 million to 122 million. His swift expansion of the brand’s presence in smaller cities across India, outside of the Tier-1 cities, was a major contributing factor to this success.
