DeHaat was founded by an IIT graduate to tackle the inefficiencies and lack of transparency that plague India’s agricultural sector, which is a significant contributor to the country’s GDP. DeHaat serves as a one-stop solution for Indian farmers, bridging the gap between corporations and farmers for over a decade.

Who is Shashank Kumar?

Shashank Kumar hails from Chhapra, Bihar. His mother was a teacher and his father worked in the Bihar National Electricity Board. He received his education at Netarhat Residential School in Jharkhand and graduated in 2008 with a degree in textile engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

Shashank Kumar also pursued a minor in business administration from IIT Delhi’s Management Studies Department. He then worked for around 2.5 years at Beacon Advisory Services, a management consulting firm. He quit his job to start a business.

Shashank Kumar and his friend Manish Kumar quit their jobs to establish a non-profit foundation called Firm & Farmers in 2011 to improve the farming industry. They later launched Dehaat’s Social Enterprise Green Agrivolution in 2012. When Shashank Kumar visited the farmers, they were surprised that a young 24-year-old boy had expertise in farming.

Amrendra Singh, Shyam Sundar, Adarsh Srivastav, and Shashank Kumar, who are alumni of IIT Delhi, IIM, and NIT, are now leading the team after Manisha Kumar left the company. The company has offices in Gurugram and Patna and aims to leverage technological advancements to assist farmers in improving their crop yields.

What is DeHaat?

DeHaat, a company based in Patna, operates as an online platform that connects small-scale farmers with a network of micro-business owners who supply various farm inputs and equipment. These suppliers purchase inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, machinery, and offer crop advisory services and market connections to farmers.

DeHaat revenue

DeHaat’s CEO, Shashank Kumar, has projected an increase in the company’s income by more than 80% to over Rs 2,300 crore for this fiscal year. This growth is attributed to the rise in sales of farm inputs to farmers and trade of agricultural products in both domestic and international markets. As per PTI, DeHaat’s revenue in 2022 was around Rs 1,250 crore.
