Family Background and Upbringing
Rubika’s mother was a scientist and father a cricket academy selector, and her grandmother had religious beliefs. In an interview about her journey to become an anchor, she shared how the idea to pursue journalism stuck with her-
“Growing up, everyone in my family had different interests, but as soon as the clock struck 9, everyone would gather around the television and listen very carefully to the lady who appeared on the screen with a flower in her hair as she read the news. That impressed me, I knew that was who I wanted to become; later on, I learned that was Salma Sultan.”
About her upbringing, she shared, “My family was very supportive; they never told me that I could or couldn’t do something because of my gender; we never had the girl-boy difference. They never really, put the burden of their expectations on me. Yes, the one thing I was expected to be was a good human. My father, in fact, taught me to deal with my business on my own. He’d say, if you get slapped, slap back, but deal with it yourself, don’t bring it home. My mom, if she taught me to make a dough of flour, she also taught me to use a bat. She taught me how to get out of a problem, if I ever landed up in one.”
She shared her struggles during her journey from Rajasthan to Mumbai and then to Delhi: “I always knew that I had to be, so I kept myself prepared. Yes, when I moved to Mumbai, I was stereotyped by my batchmates due to my belongingness to Rajasthan and was made fun of for my accent. Most often, they’d correct me on certain pronunciations or etiquettes. That was the struggle part.”
On being asked if she ever lost hope and wanted to leave everything and go back home, she replied, “No, that was something that never even occurred to me. As I said, my father brought me up, teaching me to deal with my business on my own. Packing my bags and going back home was never an option, nor a thought.”
She also shared her family’s reaction to watching her on Television by saying, “My grandmother was always fond of watching Hollywood movies, so she was pretty surprised watching me on the screen for the first time, but overall, it made them all proud and happy. They’d watch all my shows and come back with feedback, which continues to date. My father never misses a single show of mine.”

Relating to her profession, Rubika has seen quite a few controversies primarily due to differences in opinions.
Recently, Rubika was seen getting backlashes due to her tweets promoting the ban of Hijabs in schools. Rubika’s tweeted that hijabs or bikinis would not be allowed at schools, to which she faced severe backlashes from leftists and Islamic fundamentalists.

Most tweets focused on whether she’s ever worn a hijab. Priyanka Gandhi was also seen tweeting to her as a response that the constitution gives every girl the right to choose whatever she wants to wear. Gandhi, however, missed out on the point that schools work with uniforms to ensure discipline and equality, and one needs to adhere to those rules.
Liyaquat finally tweeted in response, “Priyanka Gandhi Ji, you were teaching girls to fight. That wasn’t what I expected of you. There will be no bikini, no veil, no hijab in school.”
Another controversy arose when Rubika countered a member on her show claiming the possession of an MA degree by Smriti Irani.
This happened when a member of the audience, during a heated debate, asked her, “These people (JDU and BJP supporters) are saying that your leader (Tejashwi Yadav) is only Class 9 passed. I want to remind them about their own leader Smriti Irani, who is also a union minister. What’s her degree?”
While neither the party’s supporters nor the BJP representative was willing to answer this question, Liyaquat countered the audience member with, “She’s MA passed. She’s acquired an MA degree through a correspondence course.” She then went on to repeat her incorrect fact twice by saying, “She (Irani) has done MA. She has done MA.”
This got worse after another member from the audience reminded Liyaquat of Irani’s confession of never having a bachelor’s degree while holding the country’s education portfolio. Rubika was seen fiercely defending Irani with her statement, “She’s not the education minister now!” only to make it worse.
On a different issue, Rubika was also recently seen defending the Madhya Pradesh government’s love jihad bill on prime-time news.
Rubika has also made news by accusing AAP of having hidden motives for going against the centre’s controversial agriculture bill. In an interview with Sanjay Azad Singh, Liyaquat asked him if AAP was always against the bill, why did they notify the same bill in the assembly only to later be torn apart by the AAP minister, Arvind Kejriwal.
Due to such intense debates and stern replies, Rubika is assumed to be part of sold media and has been accused of siding with the current government’s alleged anti-muslim attitude.
