The Anatomy of Lifestyle by Alfred D. Albertson: For an individual to be classified as a lifestyle model, he must exhibit these qualities: (i) a sense of personal responsibility, (ii) acceptance of a social order that involves both competence and authority, (iii) respect for a healthy environment and a self-discipline for healthy habits, (iv) motivation to learn and pursue knowledge for the advancement of one’s welfare, (v) a respect for one’s own physical and mental capabilities and a readiness to work honestly and efficiently for the attainment of these qualifications, (vi) a sense of motivation for happiness and fulfillment, (vii) a reasonable balance between the needs of the personality and the resources of life, (viii) a willingness to accept help when it is needed, (ix) a healthy appreciation of beauty and fitness, (x) a regular and adequate sleep schedule, (y) good dental and medical care, (z) an ability to make responsible decisions, (aa) a sense of humor, (aa) adequate leisure time, (bb) an interest in and enjoyment of travel, (c) no serious family troubles, (d) no serious addiction to alcohol or drugs, (e) and adequate money for personal needs. In addition, the person should be aware of his or her environment and the cultural patterns that are characteristic of it.

A definition of healthy living differs from that of the word lifestyle in the way it focuses on quality of life, rather than quantity. The former emphasizes the development of a person’s mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The latter more emphasis is laid on economic stability. Healthy lifestyles and fitness also refer to physical well being. The word lifestyle can sometimes be used to describe a set of values or a pattern of thought or action (the word “lifestyle” is often used to delineate certain behaviors or situations).

Max Weber distinguished four main components of the word lifestyle. According to him, the first component is essential to life: It is “the tendency to create and develop a community of meaning and value, which makes the world a possible place to live.” The second element is that which “has become the basis for such community and makes the world a possible place to live.” And thirdly, it is “the consciousness of these core values.”

Albertson conducted research concerning the factors that affect health and longevity. He came to the conclusion that “lifestyle changes…contribute significantly to longevity.” As he recognized, changes in lifestyle habits were important factors in affecting longevity. Among the factors he considered as important were physical exercise, stress management, avoidance of tobacco use, and a balanced diet.
