Who is IAS Ram Sabbanwad?

Ram (Rameshwar) Sabbanwad, an IAS officer from the 2022 batch of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, hails from the small Maharashtrian village of Hunderguli in the Latur district. His mother was a homemaker, while his father ran a small grocery store. Ram also has a younger sibling residing in the same place. He received his formal education at Navodaya Vidyalaya. Securing admission to Navodaya Vidyalaya was considered a challenging task during that time.

Out of a limited pool of 80 students from the district, Ram managed to secure admission to Navodaya School. After completing his schooling, he pursued a degree in engineering from Pune. During this period, he even had the opportunity to intern at Google. Subsequently, Ram went on to pursue an MBA in Public Administration from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai.

Ram Sabbanwad, a brilliant individual, was frequently awarded scholarships owing to his exceptional academic performance. He remained dedicated to his studies and received numerous job offers consistently. He was preparing to embark on a career in the corporate world when an event occurred that drastically changed his outlook on life.

An incident that inspired IAS Ram Sabbanwad to quit his engineering career and became IAS

Ram vividly remembers falling severely ill during his time working in Pune. The culprit was typhoid, which caused a significant drop in his blood platelet count. Seeking medical attention, he visited a public hospital, but unfortunately, his health did not show any improvement over several days. To undergo a blood test, he had to travel to a different hospital. They arrived at the Nanded hospital, where he was subjected to multiple unnecessary tests, leaving him puzzled and frustrated.

Lying on the hospital bed, vulnerable to the shortcomings of the government system for 15 long days, Ram pondered upon his situation. He questioned whether he had been “selfish” thus far, realizing that he had primarily been a recipient of society’s offerings. Embracing a newfound sense of responsibility, he made a firm resolve to bring about changes in the system. With this determination in mind, he embarked on his journey of preparing for the UPSC examination.

Journey of Ram Sabbanwad: From UPSC Preparation to IAS officer

Ram commenced his UPSC preparation in 2019. On his initial attempt, he appeared for the interview but unfortunately did not succeed. Undeterred, he mustered all his strength for his second attempt and achieved a remarkable feat by securing All India Rank (AIR) 202. After completing his training at LBSNAA (Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration), he was appointed as an Assistant Collector in the Muzaffarnagar district this month.
